Southport Film Guild Launches Most Exciting Season Yet!

Southport Film Guild’s (SFG) new 2015/16 programme has been announced.

Everybody loves a great film and Southport Film Guild really knows their films. Established in 1966 by local people it is one of the most established film clubs in the country.

Highlights of this season include Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner starring Timothy Spall and Selma, the chronicle of Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery.

Kajaki offers the gripping reality of war and under every step the possibility of an anti-personnel mine.  There is the Oscar surprise and quirky Bird Man with Michael Keaton and something a bit creepy with It Follows You and we see how a family deals with the aftermath of an avalanche in Force Majeure.

There is also a screening of the highly talked about and highly emotive Amy, the story of Amy Winehouse in her own words, featuring unseen archival footage and unheard tracks.

The SFG  programme is diverse and offers a real range of genres,  from the popular blockbusters to the lesser known but critically acclaimed art house and foreign films.

Emma Lloyd, Principal Manager: Programmes, Audience Development & Enterprise said:

Southport Film Guild is an important part of The Atkinson’s programme. They are about real cinema, and with that comes real choice. The films are never predictable, every season is unique  and contains very different directorial styles.

The Guild is a long established part of the arts and cultural offer within the town and we hope people of all ages will continue to support it.

It is a chance to see films that you maybe would not have considered but will always create a talking point!

This years programme once again offers something for everyone’s tastes but also challenges its members to see new films not always widely available or known”

About The Atkinson

The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful new home for music, theatre, art, poetry, literature and history, right in the middle of Lord Street in Southport. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings, to create a really welcoming multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel.

The Atkinson offers an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Wile the day away visiting the new shop, that sells gifts and contemporary crafts from regional makers and then relax in the Bakery, choosing from a selection of artisan bread sandwiches, cakes and sharing platters. You can even take little bit of The Atkinson home with you from the delicatessen. Wander through the major exhibitions and see performances from some of the UK’s foremost musicians, actors, performers and companies, films, family activities and much more.

The new Museum is now open. Sefton Between Land & Sea tells the story of Southport and Sefton as well as the area’s dramatic maritime history. While Discover Ancient Egypt – the new Egyptology Gallery is the home of the  Goodison Egyptology Collection, a remarkable collection of archaeology that has not been seen for over 40 years.
