This week, we at The Atkinson took a moment to celebrate the incredible individuals who make our institution such a special place – our fantastic volunteers! #VolunteersWeek was a chance to express our deepest gratitude for their unwavering commitment and dedication.

We kicked things off with a delightful coffee morning in our theatre bar. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff and volunteers to come together, share stories, and celebrate the unique bond that makes The Atkinson thrive.

But the festivities were just a small token of our appreciation. The true heart of our celebration lies in recognising the many ways our volunteers contribute to The Atkinson.

A Tapestry of Talents

Volunteering at The Atkinson isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition. We have a vibrant team with a diverse range of skills and interests, and their contributions come in all shapes and sizes.

• Some of our volunteers serve as friendly faces, welcoming visitors with warm smiles and answering their questions.
• Others lend a hand with essential tasks like sorting books or assisting with administrative duties.
• Do you have a passion for history or art? Our volunteers lead tours, conduct captivating spotlight talks, and even assist with gallery installations.
• And for those with a green thumb, we have a dedicated team that cares for our beautiful gardens. We even have volunteers who manage our beehives!

This is just a glimpse into the vast array of ways our volunteers support The Atkinson. Their dedication goes far beyond the tasks they complete. They bring a contagious enthusiasm, a wealth of knowledge, and a willingness to go the extra mile to create a positive and engaging experience for everyone who visits The Atkinson.

What is Volunteers’ Week?
Volunteers’ Week celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK.

The celebration starts on the first Monday in June every year. It’s a chance to recognise, celebrate and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole.

What happens during Volunteers’ Week?
From open days to celebration events, every year hundreds of online and in-person activities take place across the UK to mark Volunteers’ Week and celebrate volunteers.

This year Volunteers’ Week will culminate in The Big Help Out, from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June, where people across the UK will get the chance to experience a range of volunteer taster sessions.

Volunteers’ Week celebrates 40 years
Volunteers’ Week was first established in 1984, by what was then known as Volunteering England.

This year we’re excited to be celebrating the 40th anniversary, from Monday 3 to Sunday 9 June.
