About The Often Herd

This will be the band’s third appearance at Grateful Fred’s. Why” Because they are so good, exciting, funny and play such brilliant music.

But if you haven’t seen them before here’s a little bit about them…

The Often Herd transcend the traditional boundaries of bluegrass music. Although they might resemble an American string band, complete with driving energy, tight vocal harmonies and dazzling instrumental interplay, their vibrant, transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings; the striking natural and industrial landscapes of Northern England. This unique approach won them the title of “Best European Bluegrass Band 2018” at the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France.

Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time to psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, launching the band’s arrangements into the stratosphere. Together, their sound is both boldly contemporary and soothingly familiar, taking time-honoured traditions to new places with a fresh perspective. Flock to the herd, you won’t be disappointed.

“It’s fabulous, really exciting to listen to. Tight, virtuosic and the kind of thing you just know would be even better live!” – Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead)
“I promise you that you will be blown away by The Often Herd!” – Grateful Fred

About Limerance

One of Grateful Fred’s favourite musical duos, Jenny and Calum return to perform their wonderful close harmonies and great songs.

Limerance are an acoustic Americana duo, based in Liverpool. Playing original songs with heartfelt, optimistic and interesting lyrics, they have a growing repertoire of original music. Their unique performances comprise of one microphone, one acoustic guitar and two voices in close harmony, which have been compared to Simon and Garfunkel and First Aid Kit.

Limerance have an excellent reputation for their live shows, combining their unmistakable chemistry together with light-hearted chatter, making for engaging performances.

About Phil Caffrey

Phil is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and, it turns out, guitar collector from the North West of England.

Formerly of acoustic duo The Huers, Junction 7 and Picture This (no, me neither) with performance credits involving various freezing cold churches, social clubs, golf clubs, small theatres, the odd festival (some very odd), and some wonderful opportunities to support acts that people have actually heard of, Phil is still waiting for his big break….but enjoying the wait immensely.

He devotes his musical energy primarily into his growing YouTube channel devoted to teaching the music and unique playing style of Mark Knopfler as well as collaborating musically with anyone who will. When he’s not doing this, he spends his time finding ways to avoid finishing the many part written songs in his notebook and phone, and wondering why he gave away his large vinyl collection in the 80s.
