The Sefton Open is an annual exhibition celebrating the creativity and artistic talent across the borough. The exhibition takes over The Atkinson’s art gallery in an eclectic salon-style hang and features a wide variety of works from individual artists and local groups. Each year the exhibition attracts thousands of visitors to The Atkinson.

The Atkinson’s longstanding partner, Southport Palette Club, select the work from individual artists for the Sefton Open. The club was formed in 1921 to champion the work of local artists and this will be their 99th annual exhibition.

A wide variety of media is welcomed, including film, sculpture, craft, paintings, prints and textiles. Artists may submit up to 3 original artworks for consideration by the Council of Southport Palette Club.

Visitors to the exhibition can purchase catalogues and are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork on display. The artwork with the most votes will be awarded The People’s Prize. Visitors can also support local artists by investing in their work, most artworks are available to purchase through The Atkinson and the Own Art Scheme.

The People's Prize

We are thrilled to announce that Lauren Reis has won The Sefton Open People’s Prize for her stunning oil painting, Bird Girl. With over 250 votes cast, competition was fierce among a diverse range of exceptional artworks.

‘Bird Girl is about love. Not just the love we have for others but the love and strength that motivates each one of us. The image holds both innocence and vulnerability, while also capturing the silent wisdom of a warrior.’ – Lauren Reis

Lauren studied art at Southport College in the 90s (like her mother in the 60s), but has gone on to become a brand consultant. Her art skills are mostly self taught and she rarely undertakes commissions, sales or prints, choosing to keep her painting free from governance. Her influences are the human spirit, the natural world and surrealism. She’s also used her creativity as a way to communicate mental health, working on books to help children, making her a published illustrator.
