Our galleries are temporarily closed as we begin preparations for The Sefton Open 2026, one of the biggest annual celebrations of local creativity. The galleries will reopen on 28 March 2026.

While the galleries are closed, you can still browse our incredible collection online via Art UK, where hundreds of artworks from The Atkinson’s collection are available at your fingertips.

Between Land & Sea and Discover Ancient Egypt remain open as usual, so there’s still plenty to explore during your visit.

FAQs

What is The Sefton Open?

The Sefton Open is a major annual art exhibition celebrating creativity across the Sefton borough. Each year, The Atkinson’s galleries are transformed with an exciting salon‑style hang, showcasing an eclectic mix of artwork by individual artists and local creative groups.

Who selects the artwork on display?

Artwork from individual artists is selected by our long‑standing partners, Southport Palette Club. Founded in 1921 to support and promote local artists, the club will be marking its 100th annual exhibition at The Atkinson in 2026.

What types of artwork are accepted?

A wide range of media is welcomed for The Sefton Open, including painting, prints, sculpture, textiles, craft and film. Artists may submit up to three original artworks for consideration by Southport Palette Club.

How do I submit my artwork?

The hand‑in date for submissions is 16 March 2026, 11am – 7pm. Artists must complete the official entry form, which can be downloaded here: PDF  / Word or can be collected inside The Atkinson.
