Today, three new exhibitions open in the Art Gallery. Travel to Middle-earth, be inspired by ice cream and go back in time to the 19th century!
Matt Fox: The Magic of Middle-earth.
Collector Matt Fox has brought together a magical treasure trove of over 200 rare objects. An exhibition of family fun for all ages, from little halflings to wizened wizards, immerse yourself in Middle-earth and the many ways it has been reinterpreted since Tolkien first penned those famous words, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit…”
Chila Kumari Burman: I Love You Southport.
Chila Kumari Burman MBE is a celebrated British artist known for her vibrant, playful and rebellious artworks. Burman was born in Bootle to Punjabi- Hindu parents and later studied at Southport College of Art. ‘I Love You Southport’ includes work inspired by her father’s ice cream van, which travelled along the Sefton coast.
In 1875 William Atkinson, a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough, offered Southport Corporation £6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town. This special exhibition brings together some of the collection’s most significant pieces alongside rarely seen works that haven’t been on display for many years. Artworks are displayed in the popular 19th-century ‘Salon Hang’ style, when artworks were arranged from floor to ceiling.
