Educational Visits

At the heart of our Learning Programme for schools, higher and further education groups is our diverse collections of Local History, Egyptology and Fine Art which provide unique opportunities for unlocking curiosity through creative experiences.

We offer a range of resources for formal and informal education groups to further explore our museum, gallery, and library.

Groups can also attend high quality live performances in our theatre, with ticket prices and performances specifically for students.

KS1 and KS2

We offer a range of practical workshops, engaging museum and gallery tours and interactive drama sessions at The Atkinson. In addition, there are subject specialist teacher activity packs and educational materials that can be hired and used in the classroom.

The Atkinson can also help students and schools complete their Arts Award or Artsmark qualifications by creating bespoke sessions that work for you.

Colleges & Universities

Our varied creative programmes offer unique opportunities for students studying a range of disciplines to engage with high quality arts and culture. Whether you’re studying fashion design or art history, work with us to expand your learning and develop your ideas.

Theatre

Every December The Atkinson hosts a Christmas pantomime with performances and ticket prices exclusively for school groups. (Oh, yes we do!…)

A wide variety of performances are available throughout the year, including Shakespearean plays, adaptations from best selling children’s authors, and modern works by playwrights that explore current and topical themes.

Southport Library

The Sefton Library Service inspires families, young people, and schools to discover the magic of reading for pleasure. At The Atkinson, teachers can bring their students for an engaging introduction to Southport Library. Pupils without a library card can join by submitting a completed parental consent form at least one week before the visit. Cards will be ready for collection on the day.

• 15 Minute Library Introduction (max 30 students)
Perfect for all age groups. Students can explore and borrow books with their own library card.

• 45 Minute First-Time Visitor Session (max 30 students)
Tailored for pupils new to the library, the session includes a guided tour of the junior library, interactive storytelling, and time to choose books to take home with their own library card.

Useful information

You are welcome to explore The Atkinson independently as a group, however we ask that you please contact Jemma.Tynan@sefton.gov.uk in advance to let us know of your planned arrival date and time.

Due to limited space in some areas of our building, groups who have not booked in advance may not be able to enter our museum and galleries.

Self-led tours are free.
