The Atkinson in Southport has retained its “Very Good” rating after a mystery shopper visit by the national tourism agency, VISIT ENGLAND.

Visitor experience

Each year, VISIT ENGLAND sends its mystery shopper to attractions across the country to assess their quality of and rank the visitor experience. This year, the Inspectors rated every part of the visit as either “Very Good” or “Excellent,” and awarded The Atkinson an overall score of 89%.

In particular, the team’s customer service received outstanding praise, scoring 96%. The report highlighted staff as “welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable,” and recognised the important role they play in creating a positive experience for visitors.

The assessment also praised the clear information available before visiting, the wide range of exhibitions and performances on offer, and the high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the building. Visitors can also enjoy good quality catering and retail options.

Key cultural attraction

Cllr Liz Dowd, who is Sefton’s Cabinet member with responsibility for Arts, Culture and Libraries said: “These results build on last year’s very positive inspection and confirm The Atkinson’s continued success as a key cultural attraction in Sefton.

“I want to thank and congratulate the team who scored so highly on the customer service they provided.

Around 420,000 visitors

Each year, The Atkinson attracts around 420,000 visitors, making it one of the most significant cultural destinations in the Liverpool City Region.

Last year it delivered 36 free family activities, which attracted 2,327 participants and school visits for more than 1,100 local pupils to take part in educational workshops. And its programme of talks, tours and workshops covering heritage and artistic topics attracted over 3,900 participants.

Helpful suggestions

Cllr Dowd added: “While the overall score remains the same, with strong ratings across the board, the report included helpful suggestions of ways we can make.

“The team will be taking these on board to ensure The Atkinson continues to play a key role plays in our cultural life with a rich and varied programme of events and activities for both residents and visitors.”
