The Atkinson, Southport’s exciting new cultural venue has unveiled concept designs for the Egyptology gallery, which will display The Goodison Collection of Egyptology. The public has not seen the collection for over 40 years.

The concepts designs, created by Headland Design will be presented as part of the The Atkinson’s application for its Heritage Lottery Fund Stage two bid, which plans to move the museum collections from the Botanic Gardens Museum, to brand new purpose built display spaces in The Atkinson in 2014.

The Goodison Collection of Egyptology boasts over 1000 objects, including a sarcophagus lid, bronze figures, jewellery, clothing and scarabs. The collection is considered to be of national importance.

Stephen Whittle, The Atkinson’s Museum and Gallery Manager said, “We are really lucky to have such a wonderful Egyptology collection in Sefton. The initial designs for the gallery are very exciting and we will be putting a strong proposal to the Heritage Lottery Fund to help us display the collection in our new museum galleries.”

The Atkinson, along with the company behind the concepts, Headland Design, has been working in consultation with The Atkinson Community Consultation Group and volunteers to ensure that the final designs submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund Stage two bid meet community needs and bring Sefton’s history alive for people who live and work in and visit the area.

The Heritage Lottery Fund Stage two bid is due to be submitted on 28th May 2013, with a decision expected mid September this year.

In addition to bringing onboard specialist museum designers to design and fit out the museum spaces, the bid will also fund a three-year Learning and Participation Plan. The plan will provide a dynamic programme of events, activities, surprises and opportunities for a wide range of audiences.
