Today is recognised as Teddy Day across the world. More than just childhood companions, these fluffy friends hold a special place in our hearts, symbolising comfort, love, and even a touch of nostalgia. And what better day to celebrate them than adopting a teddy from The Atkinson on Teddy Day?!

Have you ever dreamt of sponsoring a piece of history? Not a dusty artifact, but something far cuddlier – a museum teddy bear? Well, dream no more! Our exciting “Adopt the Collection” scheme lets you choose a favourite a fluffy friend with a fascinating past, while supporting our museum and fuelling imaginations for years to come.

These aren’t your average bears. They’ve been museum residents for years, witnessing countless curious faces, sparking awe and wonder in young minds. Each one carries a unique story, whispered tales of discoveries, ancient Egyptian adventures, and perhaps even space exploration with Dan Dare!

The Atkinson’s teddy collection was donated to The Botanic Gardens Museum in 1985 by a Mrs Pearce who lived in Southport. The teddies lived in the Botanic Gardens Museum until 2012 when they moved to The Atkinson. The Atkinson’s teddy collection is a very important historical record of toys that were popular in the 20th century.

By sponsoring a teddy, you’re not taking them home, but becoming a vital part of their ongoing story. Your contribution ensures they remain cherished museum icons, inspiring future generations and keeping history alive.

By adopting a teddy, you are supporting The Atkinson Development Trust; a charity whose vision is to develop The Atkinson as a centre for communities to enjoy the Arts and learn together. Your generous donation is vital in helping the Trust to:

• Support restoration work of The Atkinson’s existing collection, as well as expanding the collection through the acquisition of new works.
• Provide creative opportunities and projects to serve the local community.
• Continue to explore new ways of using the Arts to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

Recently, the teddies even had a makeover by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers and are now proudly displayed on the first-floor landing of The Atkinson. We would love for you to come and visit them, pick your favourite, then head down to Box Office to officially adopt your new best friend.

For a £25 donation, you will receive an adoption pack include a letter from your teddy, a certificate, pin badge, post card and a bookmark. As a special thank you we will also include your name in our museum display!
