A Decade of Discovery and Delight

Ten years ago, a beacon of arts, culture, and heritage opened its doors in the heart of Southport. The Atkinson, named after local philanthropist and benefactor Lord Atkinson, emerged as a vibrant hub for learning, inspiration, and community engagement.

28 November 2023 marks a decade since The Atkinson reopened its doors after undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration. In the past ten years, we’ve hosted over 3,000 events, sold more than 440,000 tickets, issued over one million books, and served over 38,000 ice creams! We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support we have received during this time.
Thank you!

Today, as we commemorate this remarkable milestone, let’s take a joyous journey through our extraordinary decade.

A Tapestry of Treasures

From the moment you step into The Atkinson’s grand entrance, you’re enveloped in a world of captivating wonders. The museum’s extensive collection boasts an eclectic mix of art, history, and heritage, each piece whispering tales of bygone eras and igniting imaginations.

Art aficionados will revel in the museum’s impressive gallery, showcasing masterpieces from the likes of Fortunino Matania, capturing the essence of Southport’s golden age.

History buffs will find themselves immersed in the museum’s fascinating exhibits, tracing the region’s rich heritage from prehistoric times to the present day.

A Love of Learning

The Atkinson is more than just a museum; it’s an educational sanctuary where knowledge comes alive. Our dedicated team has crafted an array of engaging programs and workshops, catering to all ages and interests.

Young minds embark on captivating adventures through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, fostering a lifelong love of learning. Adults engage in thought-provoking lectures and discussions, broadening their horizons and exploring diverse perspectives.

A Thriving Theatrical Haven

Over the past decade, our theatre has welcomed renowned companies and talented individuals, bringing the magic of live performance to Southport. Audiences have been enthralled by captivating dramas, delighted by comedies, and transported to fantastical worlds through musicals and dance productions.

The Atkinson’s theatre is not just a venue for professional productions; it also provides a platform for local talent. Amateur dramatics groups, aspiring actors, and budding musicians showcase their skills on the stage, captivating audiences with their passion and enthusiasm.

A Community Cornerstone

The Atkinson has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of Southport, becoming a cherished community hub. Our doors are always open, welcoming visitors from all walks of life to connect, share, and celebrate.

A Decade of Success

Over the past decade, The Atkinson has garnered numerous accolades, cementing its reputation as a cultural gem of the North West. We have won a number of awards and constantly celebrated as a beacon of arts, culture and heritage on a national stage.

But the true measure of The Atkinson’s success lies in the countless lives it has touched. Our building has ignited a passion for learning, fostered a sense of community, and inspired creativity in countless individuals.

A Bright Future Awaits

With our unwavering dedication to excellence and innovation, The Atkinson is poised to continue our remarkable journey, illuminating the lives of generations to come.

So, let’s raise a toast to The Atkinson, a decade of remarkable achievements and a beacon of inspiration for years to come. Here’s to many more years of discovery, delight, and community spirit!
