Southport will light up pink as a mark of respect and solidarity with everyone affected by the tragic incidents which took place earlier this week.

Sefton Council will light up The Atkinson building in Southport Town Centre in pink, with a huge number of other councils and landmarks joining in tribute.

St George’s Hall, Liverpool Town Hall, the Cunard, The Mersey Gateway Bridge, Chester Town Hall and hospitals across the North West will also light up pink as a mark of respect across all three evenings (August 2nd – August 4th).

Sefton Council has issued an open invite to other public and privately owned buildings across the North West to also illuminate if they can do so to show their support and join in a united display of peace, solidarity and remembrance.

Sefton Council Leader Cllr Marion Atkinson said: “We have seen overwhelming support and sympathy from communities far and wide.

“The vigil on Tuesday evening was a touching and heartfelt moment we all shared and we continue to stand united for all of those families who are currently trying to deal with their unimaginable loss and care for victims injured.

“Lighting up our buildings is a display of the moving unity that we saw during Tuesday’s evening vigil in Southport town centre where the town came together to share their sadness and respect.”

The Community Foundation for Merseyside, in partnership with Sefton Council and Sefton CVS, has activated an urgent fundraising appeal for all those affected by the knife attack in Southport yesterday.

The Southport Strong Together Appeal, which has already received its first donation of £50,000 from the Liverpool ONE Foundation, will help to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of those affected.

Books of condolence are available for people to sign and local community groups and organisations have been opening up the doors and making generous offers of support.

Those directly affected by the incident are being supported by specially trained officers and a dedicated webpage at sefton.gov.uk has been set up to for anyone who needs access to help and support.

The council continues to urge people not to speculate on social media while an active criminal case is ongoing as to not affect future court proceedings and cause further distress to the families.
