Recently, we enjoyed an informative talk by Sofia, one of our volunteers, on The Water Carnival by Southport artist Albert Edward Halliwell. This colourful poster design can be found in our Museum on the second floor.
Sofia said,
“This design, now part of The Atkinson’s permanent collection, is a vibrant and eye-catching example of modernist style. Although it retains a distinctly illustrative quality, it departs from the more streamlined Bauhaus ideals that influenced Halliwell’s teaching and design philosophy.”
Despite Storm Eowyn raging outside, close to fifteen people bravely attended. Several questions were asked and we promised to do our best to answer these.
When did The Atkinson obtain this painting?
This painting became part of our collection in 2022.
It’s a lovely image why don’t you sell posters or postcards in the Atkinson shop?
We don’t own the copyright unfortunately so we would need to trace the copyright holder to reproduce the image in this way.
Where can I see more works by Halliwell?
The poster design and many other designs by him were sold at auction by Canterbury Auction Galleries in 2022. The catalogue is viewable online here.
If you are interested in our programme of talks please take a look at our What’s On list for future talks at The Atkinson.
