Pygmalion and Galatea. Normand, Ernest, 1857–1923.
Ernest Normand (1857–1923) was an English artist noted for his history and Orientalist paintings, many of which feature nudes.
In this painting, which dates from 1886, Normand depicts the mythological story of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with a woman he carved out of ivory, who was brought to life by Venus. The masterful depiction of the nude, and the classical subject matter, exemplify the artist’s style and reveal the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites on his work.
